South end of Columbia Gardens staging yard (lowest point on layout).  Trains awaiting their turn, from left: Empty coal unit train, manifest freight, The end of the branch line to the smelter at Trail - the entire left side of this picture will be the smelter buildings. The junction of the Trail branch (descending on left) and the mainline at the south end of Castlegar.  The nails are in holes that will be used to plant trees.  If we drilled the holes after the ground cover, we'd have white plaster dust to worry about. The Castlegar engine facility in the background, yard tracks in the foreground.  Lots of buildings to add (including the wayward coal tower from another picture). An overview of the Castlegar yard aisle - we've put the major yards at the stub end of aisles, so there will be less through traffic.   We've also replaced all the lighting since this picture - it is much brighter and more uniform. The south ladder of the Castlegar yard.  This has since been reconfigured, so Mike will have to come back for more pictures. The North end of Castlegar yard - the 0-6-0 on the second track from the front is the main yard switcher here. It's a challenge to build 35-car through freights with an engine that can only move 15 cars at a time - planning is definitely required. This track has since been reconfigured to reach the barge slip in the middle distance. Arrow Lake barges docked at Castlegar Edmonton Model Railroad Association The huge kraft pulp mill at the north end of Castlegar.   This plant is switched twice a day, generating 6 boxcars of pulp each time.  This is a good view of the car cards and waybills used to operate the Monashee Pacific. The two Arrow Lake barges that carry freight cars up the lake.  The platform under the barges slides out and left-right to allow spotting of either barge at the apron. Rousseau Ranch cattle pens at the south end of Renata.  This facility is named after a generous donor. The scratchbuilt lead/zinc ore loader at Renata. This must be early morning, since there are empties ready to load. The southbound ore train will pick up the 6 loads on the front track, and 6 more from the back, and spot the remaining 6 to be loaded later in the day. The steel arch across a creek halfway up the east side of the Monashees.  The top deck benchwork was cut away here to allow more sky above the bridge. The Edgewood station, with the ballast pit and the concrete coaling tower in the background. Limestone hoppers in front of the scratchbuilt ballast crushing plant. The spur to the coaling tower is in the foreground. The north end of Edgewood - lots of deciduous trees about to lose their leaves here. The Maintenance of Way spur at the north end of Edgewood.  The MONP Jordan spreader shares the spur with the Sperry Rail Services car, and a MONP wedge plow. Retaining walls prepared for a future rock shed. Monashee Pacific (MONP) ore cars at the site of the future Fire Valley ore mine The ore train power and caboose overnighting in Fire Valley.  Those are the public viewing windows in the wall. The hill loops around from the right, behind the photographer, to Fire Valley on the left. The town of Fire Valley, part way up the Fire Valley station and freight shed.  The two-story constuction lets the buildings conceal the window ledge.  That's a public viewing galley through the windows. The Fire Valley log loading facility - logs are trucked here, and loaded on rail cars for the trip to the pulp mill. RDCs at the Fire Valley station - these run under JMRI computer control during display operation, providing extra movement for the viewers in the public gallery. One of the standard turnout control panels, with toggles to control the Tortoise switch motors.  The yellow line indicates the main track. The main line emerges from the climb up the hill through the tunnel portal hidden behind the abandoned mine building.  This is the south end of Monashee Summit Yard - the mid-point on the layout.

The Lenz 150 point control with power supply (left) and DCC wires (right added. Diodes are added to the output from each to switch from AC to DC for Tortoise control The unit with a connector attached to the power connections (1 & 8) being tested to make sure that each point control operates The first two 'chocolate block' connectors added. Temporary power and DCC control wires added so that testing can start Wires have been added to four switch machines. The wires have been temporarily added to test that they work correctly. The two at the upper left (9A & 9B) are contro;;ed from middle left (N0 8) The unit in place on the layout bench work. The connections have been removed from the right hand side Here you can see the wires temporarily added to the Tortoise motors to test that they all work. Connectors attached to five Tortoise switch machine. At this stage it's test, test and test again Who said DCC needs just two wire? Connectors on the Tortoise machine Nearly there, the wires have been passed through the back of the board, cut to size and re-attached to the chocolate blocks. Three of the spaces will later be used to switch diodes for panel indicators or signals. Look at the dropper wires soldersd to bus wires on the left upright! What is being controlled. Nos 10A & 10B are swiched from No 4 from the Lenz unit via a switch on the No 9A point motor No 7 point is controlled from No 1 on the Lenz, while 9A or 9B will operate depending on the setting of No 8 Point No 8 is operated from No 2 on the Lenz. To the left you can see the crossover operated from another Lenz unit There are 6 points shown here with some stock on ready fro testing. It all works! The CP GP38 is using the crossover. The UP unit is on what I will probably use as an intechange track while the CP SD40 at rear is on the Eastbound passing track. The short piece of track not connected shows where the Westbound passing track will be added when I've added some more benchwork This is the temporary yard with a pair of SD60's at the point of a hopper train. This angle shots just how much the benchwork rises and falls in the loft. A pair of UP SD60's at the point of a hopper train on the temporary trackwork UP SD60's, SD45 and SD24 with a Santa Fe U boat at the temporary yard which will become Beccaton The interchange area at the approach to Michaelsberg (round the corner where the Tortoise controlled trackwork in) Interchange aproach to Michaelsberg I keep a notebook and pencil on the bench to write down any faults that need correcting We used what I hope will be the climb around the water tanks (on the right) as a RIP track during the running session A close up of the hopper train A notebook and pencil at hand to record any faults duringthis first running session This shot shows the angle of the roof trusses. I've painted them white but I'd like to find some way to disquise them with scenery This shows the temporary track held in place by screws and washers The electriacl return is made with crocodile clipped wires. It doesn't matter how it looks - it works! The cross over whch allows locos to run round a short train or form part of a puzzle for a larger train. I just have to have something that challeneges the operators' brain! An overall view of the temporary track laid with srews and washers to hold the track in place. The red and black wires are the feeds for the DCC. It works!

It was the job of my guide to repair this ready to be taken to Coquitlam for re-use Not certain where this one is. My wife took it as we were crossing high over the Frazer River well east of Coquitlam This Thompson River valley shot shows how the railroad's curves minics that of the mountain it clings to Kamloops CP yard Kamloops Heritage Railway Caboose at the heritage station. The whole colour scheme os the railway copies the older green CN colours. GE C9-44W (Dash 9-44W) leads the eastbound train north through Kamloops.
